Niches and Keywords - what are they and why do we need them?
Dictionary.com defines the word "niche" as a special area of demand or having specific appeal and "keyword" as a significant descriptive word.
Most people use "dogs and golf" to explain niches but personally I think those have been done to death so I will use "scrapbooking" as my example of a niche because it's one of my hobbies I am familiar with.
Scrapbooking by itself is a very broad niche and in too high of demand especially for a beginner to even attempt until you understand how this all works together. You will need to "drill down" as they say to get to a more specific "niche" pertaining to scrapbooking.
Using Google Adwords Keyword Tool, last month there were 1,830,000 searches on the word scrapbooking but if you drill down deeper to get to a more specific "niche" or target "scrapbooking page layouts" had 1,900 searches, "scrapbooking magazines" shows 2,900, and "premade scrapbook pages" came in with 4,400. Digging down even further, "scrapbooking help" showed 720 searches.
These are doable niches because they all deal with scrapbooking but we are getting into a more specific targets, like "layouts, magazines, premade and help."
Now I am sure not everyone reading this is interested in scrapbooking but you can use this method with anything you are interested in. The main objective is to find out what the people are looking for, what they are interested in and what they are buying.
Some great places to look for niches and keywords and to see what people are interested in, interested in buying and what are "hot selling items" is:
All three of these places are FREE and a good place to start to look for a "niche" to base your business on.
EzineArticles.com is another free resource to investigate and see what are the "most viewed" articles in the last 90 days. This will give you some insight to what people are interested in. Go to the top of the page and enter your search term. I used "scrapbooking", click on any article and scroll down the page to find "Most Viewed Articles Within The Last 90 Days".
There are many great articles on EzineArticles.com that will help you understand "niche and keyword" searching in your efforts to learn what it is all about.
